Girls in School

Whilst working alongside the Head and Duputy Head of the Secondary school ,we have become aware that the attendance by girls in later school years diminishes. Girls drop out of school, partly for financial reasons- if there is a choice to be made between a brother and sister- the brother will be sent to get an education.

Girls also miss chunks of schooling due to their monthly cycle. We feel strongly that all girls should be able to, and be encouraged to, attend school all the time. During our most recent visit we were able to provide all the girls at the Secondary school with reusable feminine hygiene packs. These had been made by a group of volunteers providing underwear, pads, soap, and storage bags. We are in close communication with the Head to monitor the success and impact of this programme. It is our aim to continue to provide these girls and others like them with packs. We would like perhaps to explore the possiblility of the packs being made within the community- encouraging the community to help themselves.
